GS23562- VPA 1 The Future of Cooking in Zambia

This VPA aims to support the energy transition and reduce charcoal consumption and related greenhouse gas emissions through the distribution of improved charcoal cookstoves and pellet gasifier cookstoves, applying a fuel-switch approach. By promoting the adoption of cleaner and more efficient cooking solutions, the VPA contributes to reducing reliance on traditional charcoal and lowering associated environmental and climate impacts. The VPA will be implemented in Zambia, with a particular focus on the Copperbelt region, targeting urban and peri-urban areas. The activities are designed to generate positive impacts within local communities, with specific attention to supporting women’s empowerment through improved access to clean cooking technologies, reduced time spent on fuel collection, and enhanced livelihood opportunities. In addition, the VPA includes the construction of water towers to ensure reliable access to safe drinking water, along with continuous capacity-building activities aimed at strengthening local skills, knowledge, and long-term socio-economic resilience.
