GS23645-VPA-1 Wells of Life: Sustainable Safe Water for Malawi
The Wells of Life – Sustainable Safe Water for Malawi is a voluntary carbon mitigation Programme of Activities (PoA) registered under the Gold Standard for the Global Goals (GS4GG), coordinated and managed by EOS Climate and Energy Ltd as the Coordinating and Managing Entity (CME). The Programme is designed to improve continuous access to safe and reliable drinking water in underserved communities in Malawi, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with the boiling of drinking water using non-renewable biomass fuels. VPA-1, the first real case Voluntary Project Activity under the PoA, covers 19 solar-powered groundwater well systems implemented across the Southern Region of Malawi, spanning the districts of Machinga, Zomba, Mulanje, Thyolo, and Blantyre. The Programme applies the Safe Drinking Water Supply (SDWS v2.0) methodology and contributes to SDG 3, 5, 6, 7, 13, and 15. No financial burden is placed on end-users; access to safe drinking water is provided free of charge to beneficiary communities.
