MicroEnergy Credits – Integrated Cooking & Space Heating Carbon Mitigation Program – Bhutan

The project aims to provide households and institutions in Bhutan with electric cooking and space-heating technologies to reduce GHG emissions from the use of firewood, biomass, and fossil fuels. Developed under GS, the project will deliver verified emission reductions and socio-economic benefits. For cooking, the project targets low-income households, schools, monasteries, fodder preparation, and small commercial establishments, including rural and high-altitude communities. In the absence of the project, cooking needs are primarily met through firewood, traditional stoves, and LPG, resulting in emissions, pressure on forest resources, and indoor air pollution. The project promotes efficient electric cooking technologies, including induction and infrared cookstoves powered by grid electricity. This transition reduces fuel consumption and emissions while improving indoor air quality, reducing cooking time and costs, and enhancing health and well-being. For space heating, the programme promotes the replacement of traditional biomass-based heating systems with efficient electric heaters, particularly in colder regions where firewood is the primary heating fuel.
