Community Water Supply through Gravity Driven Membrane Filtration (GDM) Kiosks in Uganda

This small-scale voluntary project “Community Water Supply through Gravity Driven Membrane Filtration (GDM) kiosks in Uganda” is developed by myclimate Foundation and implemented with Get Water Uganda in rural communities in Busia, Namayingo and Mayuge Districts, eastern Uganda. It will install and operate 30 decentralised GDM water kiosks, complemented by solar-powered pumping, chlorination, routine water quality control and a cashless water ATM system, to provide households with reliable access to safe drinking water. The project aims to replace the common practice of boiling drinking water, which relies on non-renewable biomass and other fuels. By making treated, safe drinking water available at community kiosks, the project reduces the need for boiling and, consequently, greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to climate mitigation, the project follows a holistic community-services approach. It is expected to improve access to safe drinking water for approximately 20,000 households, support WASH awareness activities, create local employment for kiosk operation and maintenance, and provide training for local technicians and water committees.
