Belize Coastal Sargassum Resilience and Circularity Project

The Belize Coastal Sargassum Resilience and Circularity Project aims to intercept and process sargassum biomass and eligible biodegradable organic matter to avoid methane emissions from uncontrolled decomposition and landfill disposal. The project combines controlled aerobic treatment, decentralized organic waste processing, and circular resource recovery to transform intercepted biomass into beneficial products, including biochar-enriched compost for local use. Implemented initially in Caye Caulker, Belize, in collaboration with local stakeholders, the project is designed to strengthen coastal resilience, support sustainable land management, reduce environmental impacts associated with sargassum accumulation, and contribute to measurable climate mitigation outcomes under Gold Standard methodologies.
