AWD Methane Reduction Project in Cambodia

The Amru Rice AWD Project in Cambodia supports the adoption of Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) in irrigated rice cultivation to reduce methane emissions while maintaining stable yields and farmer livelihoods. The project replaces continuous flooding with controlled wetting and drying cycles, using water-level pipes to guide irrigation timing and ensure safe drainage thresholds. By reducing anaerobic soil conditions in paddy fields, AWD can significantly lower methane emissions while also improving irrigation water efficiency. The project is expected to scale to beyond 20,000 hectares. The project is being co-developed by Amru Rice Cambodia and CarbonFarm, with both parties acting as project proponents. Amru Rice Cambodia leads on-ground implementation, while CarbonFarm supports as a technical partner through digital MRV tools, including satellite imagery, AI-based field monitoring, and selected IoT devices to strengthen data traceability.
