Rossmann Nicaragua - Reforesting diverse native tree species in East Nicaragua

The project proponent is Rossmann Beteiligungs GmbH. The project “Rossmann Nicaragua - Reforesting diverse native tree species in East Nicaragua” is an ambitious private-led environmental project aimed at transforming 936 hectares of degraded slash & burn land in the tropical lowland of East Nicaragua into a thriving, diverse native forest ecosystem. The project activities encompass an afforestation/reforestation activity that mitigates climate change: The establishment of a mainly native tree species reforestation at an area which has been used so far for cattle, applying „slash and burn“ practices for at least the last two decades. The cattle was grazing throughout the majority of the year and the bush was burned down and slashed frequently to enable new grass growth. The project does not only include the reforestation of 21 mainly native trees but also additional forest islands, 200 ha which were protected from slash & burn and are not eligible as project activities. They serve as biodiversity habitats and bridges for wandering animals seeking new habitats.
