Green Briquettes for Fossil Fuel Displacement in South Africa

The proposed Programme of Activities (PoA) involves the production of biomass briquettes, with the objective of replacing conventional fossil fuels such as coal, furnace oil, and firewood commonly used by industries and institutions for thermal energy applications. The primary goal is to promote the use of clean, renewable, and sustainable biomass energy while reducing reliance on carbon-intensive fuels. Each Voluntary Project Activity (VPA) under this PoA will involve the manufacture of briquettes using agricultural residues and other organic biomass waste, which are typically discarded or left to decompose, resulting in methane emissions and environmental degradation. By converting this waste into high-density fuel briquettes, the PoA addresses key environmental and economic challenges. It contributes to greenhouse gas emission reductions by displacing fossil fuels and preventing methane emissions from un-managed biomass waste. The initiative also supports improved waste management through the productive use of agricultural residues, offers access to cleaner-burning fuels for small and medium-sized industrial units, and generates local employment across the biomass value chain—fr
