GS23401 VPA-1 Sustainable Rice Cultivation for Smallholder Farmers in India
The VPA aims to reduce methane emissions from irrigated paddy fields by implementing the Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) technique. Unlike traditional continuous flooding methods, AWD involves intermittent flooding, allowing fields to dry at certain intervals. This approach significantly reduces methane production while also lowering water consumption, making it both environmentally, socially and economically beneficial. In addition to promoting AWD, the VPA will support participating farmers with a comprehensive package of best practices tailored to optimize rice cultivation in the region.
