FS BECCS Project

The FS BECCS project, proposed under the Gold Standard for Global Goals (GS4GG), reflects FS – Fueling Sustainability’s ambition to lead Brazil’s energy transition with innovation, technical excellence, and private investment. Founded in 2017, FS is the third-largest ethanol producer in the country, operating modern plants in Mato Grosso. At its Lucas do Rio Verde facility, FS will capture biogenic CO₂ from corn ethanol fermentation. The stream, with about 98% purity, will be compressed, dehydrated, and injected into deep geological formations of the Parecis Basin for secure, long-term storage. As this CO₂ originates from the atmosphere via photosynthesis, its storage delivers net carbon removals. Project development followed four phases: Phase 1 (2019–2020) confirmed storage potential through feasibility studies and 2D seismic data. Phase 2 (2020–2022) added a 3D seismic survey and design of capture and compression systems. Phase 3 (2022–2024) drilled a stratigraphic well, collected geological data, and began equipment procurement. Phase 4 (2024–2026), now underway, includes injectivity tests, well conversion, monitoring infrastructure, and capture system construction. Commercia
