GS12572 VPA-3 Sustainable Paddy Cultivation Initiative in India
This VPA intends to help farmers adopt new improved irrigation practice in paddy in India. Improved irrigation practices include Alternate wetting and drying (AWD) to reduce methane emission from paddy field. AWD is a proven method to reduce CH4 emission by as much as 48% compared to continuously flooded conditions where high rates of CH4 are emitted by the lands due to the anaerobic decomposition of the organic matter. The overarching goal of the project activities is to implement sustainable irrigation management techniques that reduce methane emission and advance the socioeconomic situation of the project region. The VPA aims to reduce estimated GHG emission (tCO2e) of 52,821 tCO2e / year.
