TerraClear Safe Drinking Water in Laos 💦

In Laos consistent access to safe, potable water remains a critical challenge, forcing many rural communities to rely on contaminated sources. To mitigate health risks, households traditionally boil water over biomass and charcoal fires—a practice that is labor intensive, environmentally taxing, and is a significant contributor to deforestation and indoor air pollution. TerraClear, a social enterprise based in Laos, addresses this issue through the manufacture and distribution of locally produced ceramic water filters. These gravity-fed household treatment systems require zero energy input, providing a sustainable, emissions-free alternative to traditional boiling. By replacing carbon-intensive water treatment with this clean technology, the project directly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and waterborne diseases while simultaneously improving school attendance and productivity. With the support of carbon finance, TerraClear will continue to scale its operations to reach hundreds of thousands of families and create sustainable jobs in rural areas, ensuring that clean water access no longer comes at the cost of vital forest resources.
